Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, it is written: man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
At one of the last Bible lessons held in our Church every Wednesday, we started to discuss chapter 4 of the Book of Mark. This chapter talks about the temptation of Jesus Christ by the Devil after He received water baptism. After fasting for forty days and forty nights Jesus was hungry. That natural desire provided an advantage to the Tempter, which he used successfully towards many people. He suggested that Jesus use His miraculous power and turn rocks into bread.
Satisfaction of natural desires with the help of God’s power as a result of Satan’s influence is direct disobedience to God. Jesus answered with a quote from Deuteronomy 8:3, that man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
This example of our Lord teaches us to be obedient to God. Earning bread is not the most important thing in life. It is more important to be obedient to every Word of God. Because Jesus did not receive any instructions from His Father to turn rocks to bread, He, even though He was hungry, did not act on His own will and surrender to Satan.
The second lesson is that Jesus applied the written Word as a spiritual weapon to reflect the Devil’s attacks.
Dear friends! I wish for every one of us to be victorious in any temptations. Let us remember that even though the Devil can attack those who are guided by the Holy Spirit, he is powerless against those who resist him with the Word of God!
Be blessed!
Love,
